The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, will join the GQUAL, which seeks to promote gender parity in the composition of international tribunals and monitoring bodies in charge of developing international law, human rights and international cooperation and relations.
President Bachelet will be the second head of state to adhere to the campaign and the first female president in the Latin American region to sign the GQUAL Declaration.
GQUAL is a global campaign works with States to ensure they nominate and vote for international positions while keeping in mind gender parity, as well as to develop mechanisms, guidelines and standards to achieve the consideration of gender in selection processes.
The adherence ceremony will take place on August 9th at 3:00 pm (Santiago, Chile) at the Palacio de la Moneda.
President Bachelet’s adherence to the campaign will be in addition to the other world leaders that have made a call for immediate gender parity in international representation. Her signature will take place in addition with the signatures of Cecilia Medina Quiroga (former judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights), Marta Mauras (Permanent ambassador of Chile to the UN), Maria Soledad Cisteras Reyes (member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities), and other Chileans that work in the development of international law, human rights and international relations.
